The Gold Coast Hinterland, NSW

We hopped back into the car to exchange the sun, sea, and sand for sun, humidity, and rainforest. Our gameplan was to visit the most interesting sites of the Gold Coast Hinterland in a single day, which meant a lot of driving, hiking, and picture-taking. The first picture is the amazing Purlingbrook Falls which can easily rival with the beautiful waterfalls we saw in the Milford Sound, NZ.

Now to get to the most beautiful part, we had to drive on up into the mountains (McPhersons Range) and along the way took some pictures of the self-acclaimed "best-of-all" lookout. And yes it was nice. Along the way, we even saw some wallabies (= small kangaroos) chilling next to the road. Our plan was to visit both the Lamington National Park and Springbrook National Park which are part of the World Heritage Listed Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves.

Next stop, the Natural Bridge. The Natural Bridge is a naturally formed rock arch over Cave Creek (the headwaters of the Nerang River). It was formed from a waterfall which undercut a cave beneath the waterfall and dug a pothole on top, until the two joined and the creek flowed through the cave, leaving an arch across the front. Just look at the pic (there was even a sleeping bat colony and at night you can also spot glowworms).

More gushing water down the Natural Bridge

Our final park-destination for that day was O'Reilly's, a guesthouse with its famous treetop/canopy walk (first eco-tourism destination in Australia) located in Lamington National Park. Besides the many native parrots, which were got very friendly with Chel (a case of Bird meets Bird), we decided to do the treetop walk combined with a small walk through the jungle. Now it was all very touristy (is that a word?), but nevertheless a cool experience to walk among rainforest treetops, +/-10-12 meters in the air over suspended wooden bridges. We even climbed higher into a lookout to get the best pictures for all you loyal blog-viewers :-). It was a tiring but rewarding day, and despite the long drive, we drove a little more... all the way to Brisvegas baby!

The treetops walk involved some climbin antics

But what a view
