Kompong Cham, KC Province

After an overwhelming introduction to Cambodia, we went straight on through to the decaying city of Kompong Cham in the mighty Mekong river delta. Kompong Cham used to be an important trading town during the French occupation but has now lost much of its former glory. We were only there for a day. Within this short time period we visited the local market and had some great food, but the highlight was a bikeride through the countryside, including a visit to a local temple, school, and tobacco plantation. Another cool feature was that we crossed the Mekong river by a bamboo bridge. During the dry season the Mekong is reduced to a small river and every year they build an entire bamboo bridge for the people to use (for a small fee). During the monsoon, however, they have to take it down or the river does that for them. All in all, a nice little introduction into the day-to-day life of many Cambodians.
