Now you know that we already went turtle spotting in Mon Repos. However, Heron Island is also known for its turtling nesting grounds and so we spent our two nights (and parts of the days) in search of turtles (without disturbing them of course). Now we have some video footage about the night but that's on DVD so it's for later.

Anyways, we have seen more than 7 turtles in total, either going up or down the beach and digging their nests (no hatchlings though)). We spent our entire evenings just watching these magnificent animals from a safe distance do their thing. The only unfortunate thing about Heron is that people can go find these animals themselves and too often disturb them. This was the only thing that really annoyed us: these poor turtles need so much energy to climb up the beach and lay their eggs (they can't eat anymore when they're fully pregnant because there is no room left for food) that every failed attempt can force the turtle to get rid of the eggs at sea or absorb them, thereby decreasing their chances of survival as a species even more. Think about it: who was here first? Exactly.

Huffing, puffing, and literally digging till exhaustion
