NYE '07 in "Emerald City" (Part II - Night)

On and on from the break of dawn. Or better, dusk. While we both had painful bums from the pavement, nighttime was finally setting in. The spot had already reached max. capacity so we thought it couldn't get any worse. Now nothing really special happened until 9 PM when there would be some sort of "cahildren's" fireworks. It was then when the first wave of mayhem began. People started going insane and ran up against our spot pressing us and the Germans before us into the fence. It was nearly impossible to hold down the fort and it wasn't even NYE! To avoid more of the same, we'll now go straight to the fireworks.

Time to deliver the goods Emerald City. And boy did they. The started the show with a big "question mark" on the bridge to get us all curious. And then the fireworks (and the people) just went of. Look at the short clip and you'll get the idea perfectlty. We were all smashed into the fence but we were lucky enough to see most of everything (and film it too). It was indeed an amazing display seeing the Harbour Bridge and Opera House all lit up. And guess what the "question mark" ended up becoming... no? A bloody coat hanger (=kleerhanger). We both thought they were kidding but the coat hanger was the symbol for Syney and its surroundings suburbs. Great fireworks and some educational info all mashed into one big partynight. Now the question everyone is thinking about: was it worth the 12+ hour wait? Yes it was... you have to experience this once in a lifetime. Enough said ;-)



After the fireworks were over, everyone was driven off the grounds like cattle. We headed back to our hotel by foot through a very loud and crowded city. Now remember that Sois ate some bad junkfood? Well, it came back with a vengeance. Just before reaching the hotel where our luggage was stored, he got the "cramps". Let's keep it at this: if Chel hadn't found one of Sydney's filthiest toilets in time, there would have been a VERY embarassing and unhealthy public spectacle. After this ordeal, another still awaited. Since we had no sleeping accomodation we fell asleep in the lobby of the hotel. We "lounged" until 5:00 am and then took a very dubious taxi to the Airport. The AVIS counter opened at 5:20 and we got our car (Toyota Yaris with a booth (=koffer)) to get the hell out of there! Tired but determined we went "en route" to the next destination/post. Oh, and Happy New Year's everyone!!!
